Baccarat Third Card Rule: How Player and Banker Hands Are Drawn

How a Baccarat Round Works

The baccarat third card rule decides whether the player or the banker takes one more card after the first two are dealt. In punto banco, the version this guide describes, it depends only on the hand totals and, for the banker, on what the player drew, so nobody at the table makes a drawing decision.

Card values and the units digit

An ace is worth one point, the 2 to 9 cards carry their printed number, and tens and court cards are worth nothing. Only the units digit of the sum counts, so a 7 and an 8 make a hand worth 5, and no hand can total more than 9.

Player, banker and tie outcomes

Each round ends in a player win, a banker win or a tie, and the drawing rules below apply to both hands the same way each time. Those baccarat rules leave nothing to judgement in punto banco, which is why the third card rule is worth learning once; check the rules shown at any table before you stake, including E2Bet live baccarat.

The Player's Third Card Rule

The player hand is the easier of the two. Its decision comes from a single number, the total of its first two cards.

When the player draws, and naturals

In punto banco a player with an initial total of 5 or less draws a third card, and a player with an initial total of 6 or 7 stands. That leaves no grey area: a hand of 5 draws and a hand of 6 stands, whatever the banker is holding. If the player or banker or both reach a total of 8 or 9 on the first two cards, the round ends and the result is announced. Neither side draws in that case, so a round can finish before any third card appears. Check the table rules on the E2Bet platform if a round ends early and you are unsure why.

The Banker's Third Card Rule

The banker rule is conditional. In punto banco, if the player stood with two cards, the banker follows the same drawing rule as the player, so it draws on 5 or less and stands on 6 or 7. The totals below apply only after the player has drawn, and tables can differ, so the rules displayed at the table take priority.

Banker totals 0 to 2

When the player draws a third card, a banker with a total of 0 to 2 draws a third card regardless of the player's third card. Nothing the player drew can change that result, which makes these the simplest banker decisions to remember.

Banker totals 3 to 6

The middle totals are where the player's third card starts to matter. Each total has its own trigger, so it helps to read the list from the top.

  • Total of 3: draws unless the player's third card is an 8.
  • Total of 4: draws if the player's third card is a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7.
  • Total of 5: draws if the player's third card is a 4, 5, 6 or 7.
  • Total of 6: draws only if the player's third card is a 6 or 7.

The list of player cards that trigger a draw gets shorter as the banker's total rises, until a banker on 6 draws against only two of them.

When the banker stands

A banker with a total of 7 stands. The outcome is the same whether the player drew or not, since a 7 would also stand under the player's own rule.

Payouts, Commission and House Edge

Drawing rules decide who wins a hand, but the payout and the house edge decide what a win is worth. The three bets are priced differently.

Banker commission and the tie bet

A winning banker bet normally pays 19 to 20: even money, less a 5% commission taken by the house. In punto banco the player bet has a house edge of 1.24%, and the banker bet, once the commission on the win is counted, has a house edge of 1.06%. A baccarat tie bet that pays 8 to 1 has a house edge of 14.4%. That is far above the 1.24% and 1.06% quoted for the player and banker bets, so the tie costs the most per unit staked even though 8 to 1 looks generous on paper.

How the game is banked

In punto banco the casino banks the game at all times and plays out both hands according to fixed drawing rules, using six or eight decks of cards. Mini baccarat is a version of punto banco played on a small table with smaller minimums and maximums.

Reading Baccarat Roads and Scoreboards

Modern baccarat tables often display previous results from the current shoe on scoreboards or road recording forms. They record what has already happened and nothing more.

The five common roads

Common baccarat roads include the Bead Plate Road, the Big Road, the Big Eye Boy, the Small Road and the Cockroach Road. Each one is a different way of laying out the same past results.

Where roadmaps appear at E2Bet

Live Baccarat at E2Bet has multiple tables, roadmaps and squeeze options, and the tables also carry real-time statistics and live streaming. Pragmatic Play says its Speed Baccarat supports the five traditional baccarat roads and live player trend statistics.
